Spend NO MORE THAN $4.00 A DAY ON FOOD AND DRINK, document your experience and help bring awareness to the 43,000 people in The Bahamas for whom this is an everyday reality!
In observance of World Hunger Day, Hands for Hunger has launched the Dine On The Line Challenge, an annual awareness campaign that highlights the reality of hunger in The Bahamas. For four days, in solidarity with the 43,000 people living below the poverty line, participants dine on the poverty line consuming only what can be purchased with $4.00 per day. Participants are then encouraged to reflect on their experience and share their thoughts and findings from doing the challenge.
By taking part in Dine On The Line you have an opportunity to support Hands for Hunger, change your perspective and shed light on the challenges related to hunger in The Bahamas.

What is “The Poverty Line”?
The “poverty line” is the minimum amount of money needed in order for a person to fulfill his or her essential needs. It is determined by economists who take into account the cost of living in a country.
In 2013, The Bahamas Department of Statistics conducted a Household Expenditure Survey. Based on the data received, it was decided that the absolute poverty line is now $11.64 per person per day ($4,247 annually). This is the amount an individual needs to meet his/her basic necessities.
Of this $11.64, it is estimated that $3.82 is spent on food.
Can I eat food or groceries that were bought before beginning the Challenge?
No. To truly experience what it is like to Dine on The Line, you can only eat food that you purchased at the start of the challenge. Remember to not go over $4.00!
Is water included in the $4.00? Yes, bottled water in included. Everything that you consume that has to be purchased is included in the $4.00.
What about spices?
Yes, spices too! Any spices that are bought are included in the $4.00.
What if I eat more than $4.00 worth of food?
If you do eat something that’s outside of your budget then tell us about it! We’re interested in know the struggles that you face while Dining on The Line. Go to social media and tell us what led to you eating more. Were you just too hungry to make it? Did you simply forget to stay within $4.00? Did you ask for charity?
Can I form a team and pool our money?
Absolutely! Work as a team and you can combine your money and perhaps have more food options. You also have a group of people to help and support you through this journey.
