Hunger is a silent struggle for many. The facts about Food Insecurity in The Bahamas may surprise you.
WHAT IS FOOD INSECURITY?
Food Insecurity describes a situation where a person does not have reliable access to nutritious food. However, it is not a black and white situation. According to the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), Food Insecurity exists on a spectrum that ranges from mild, to moderate, to severe.
Below are 8 questions that help to determine food insecurity.
During the last 12 months was there a time when (because of a lack of resources):
- You were worried you would not have enough food to eat?
- You were unable to eat healthy and nutritious food?
- You ate only a few kinds of foods?
- You had to skip a meal?
- You ate less than you thought you should?
- Your household ran out of food?
- You were hungry but did not eat?
- You went without eating for a whole day?
Answering ‘yes’ to fewer than 3 questions indicates mild food insecurity.
Answering ‘yes’ to 3-4 questions indicates moderate food insecurity.
Answering ‘yes’ to 5 or more indicates severe food insecurity.

1 in every 10 people in The Bahamas live below the poverty line and experience severe Food Insecurity. This part of the population have less than $4.00 a day to spend on food.

Hands for Hunger has afforded me the opportunity to work alongside like minded individuals who believe in being of service. Being an H4H Volunteer is gratifying! My life continues to be enriched by the experience of volunteering for this organization. I chose to volunteer with H4H because the organization is well established and has become a staple in the community for providing foo to this in need.
